The Ildari are a tribe of nomadic goliaths whose ancestral territory was subsumed by the Shadowfell and now lies beyond the Breach. Whether they were nomadic before their homeland was invaded is an item of some debate. They now make their living off the vast plains in north-central Covenant lands, with some clans choosing to live nearer to the Breach than any “civilized” man would. They use their close connection to the land and to nature to fend off the undead hordes.
In the language of the goliaths, “ildari” means “those who stand apart.” The Ildari emigrated to northern Amnos from Petra generations ago. The Ildari themselves do not know exactly how long ago that was; scholars agree that it was about 250 years ago. Some scholars believe that the Ildari were exiled from their ancestral home for the misdeeds of a clan chief; a more recent theory holds that they were sent to the Far North to fulfill a prophecy. In either case, the Ildari are facing extinction from the Breach, and are now desperate enough to work with the Covenant to stop that.
